**New Delhi, March 30, 2025** – The Supreme Court of India today dismissed a plea urging stricter measures against stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana. The court cited a lack of specifics in the application filed by environmental activist Vikrant Tongad.
The plea argued that stubble burning, particularly prevalent in April and May, causes severe air pollution impacting the health of millions across Delhi-NCR and the affected states, especially children and the elderly. It further claimed that this persistent pollution violates fundamental rights guaranteed by the Indian Constitution.
Despite acknowledging past directives on the issue, the court stated its reluctance to entertain further interventions while existing cases are still under consideration. A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan dismissed the application, emphasizing the need for more detailed submissions. The court’s decision comes despite rising concerns about stubble burning and its impact on air quality.
