**Yangon, Myanmar/Bangkok, Thailand –** A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck northwest of Sagaing, Myanmar, on Friday, resulting in over 1,000 deaths in Myanmar and at least 10 in neighboring Thailand. The shallow quake, which struck at 12:50 pm local time (0650 GMT), triggered a 6.7 magnitude aftershock and numerous smaller tremors, sending shockwaves across the region.
The earthquake’s impact was felt as far as India and China, causing widespread panic and damage. In Myanmar, the already fragile situation exacerbated by ongoing civil war hampered rescue efforts. Buildings collapsed in Mandalay, including the nearly century-old Ava Bridge, leaving residents trapped under piles of rubble. The disaster prompted a rare plea for international aid from Myanmar’s military junta.
Thailand also suffered significant losses, with the collapse of a high-rise building under construction near Bangkok’s Chatuchak market killing 10 and leaving up to 100 workers feared trapped. The Thai government convened an emergency meeting to coordinate relief efforts.
India swiftly responded, dispatching 15 tons of relief supplies and 80 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel under “Operation Brahma” to assist Myanmar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and pledged India’s full support. The Indian embassy in Thailand reported no casualties among its citizens.
The European Union and the United States also pledged aid, highlighting the international concern over the catastrophe. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue operations continue amidst the challenging circumstances in both countries. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
