**Bangkok/Yangon** – A devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck northwest of Sagaing, Myanmar on Friday has claimed the lives of over 1,800 people and injured thousands more across Myanmar and Thailand. The death toll in Myanmar currently stands at 1,644, with 3,408 injured. In Thailand, the quake caused a 30-story building under construction in Bangkok to collapse, resulting in 17 confirmed deaths and 32 injuries. Authorities are still searching for 82 missing people from the collapsed building, with police expressing grave concerns about their survival prospects.
The earthquake, followed by a 6.7 magnitude aftershock, caused widespread destruction in Myanmar, particularly in Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city. Buildings were destroyed, bridges collapsed, and roads were buckled. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed. Rescue efforts are ongoing in both countries.
