**Newark, NJ** – The Prudential Center is buzzing with activity as it prepares to host the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament’s East Regional this week, marking a triumphant return for the venue after a 14-year hiatus. Dylan Wanagiel, Vice President of Sports Properties and Special Events for Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, has overseen meticulous preparations, guided by the NCAA’s extensive 300-page manual.
The meticulous planning extends to every detail, from the official NCAA court – which may even find a permanent home at the arena – to seating arrangements prioritizing top seeds and a police escort for the teams. A new “Fan Zone” outside the arena will add to the excitement.
The return of March Madness to Newark is particularly significant given a past ban stemming from New Jersey’s legalization of sports betting, a prohibition since lifted. Wanagiel expressed hopes to make this a top-tier event, paving the way for future appearances.
Looking beyond this week’s tournament, Wanagiel is spearheading an ambitious project: a new eight-team college basketball showcase featuring all eight New Jersey Division I men’s programs. Inspired by Philadelphia’s “Big Five” event, he envisions a substantial tournament with significant appearance fees to attract top coaches.
Wanagiel’s experience also extends to NCAA wrestling, having successfully brought the tournament to Madison Square Garden. He hopes to bring this event to Newark as well, leveraging New Jersey’s passionate wrestling fanbase.
While future March Madness appearances are already determined through 2028, Wanagiel aims to secure a more regular spot for Newark in the rotation, aiming to reduce the gap between appearances from the current 14 years. He sees the ultimate success of this week’s event as establishing Newark as a consistent contender in hosting future East Regionals.
