**Yangon, Myanmar/Bangkok, Thailand –** The death toll from a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday continues to climb. The ruling military junta in Myanmar reported over 1,700 fatalities, with approximately 3,400 injured and 300 still missing. The quake caused widespread devastation, destroying buildings, bridges, and roads, with particularly heavy damage reported in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city.
The earthquake also impacted neighboring Thailand, where the death toll in Bangkok has reached 17, according to city authorities. The majority of these fatalities resulted from the collapse of a 30-story building under construction. Bangkok authorities also reported 32 injuries and 82 missing persons, primarily from the construction site. A 6.7 magnitude aftershock followed the initial quake, further compounding the damage. Rescue efforts are ongoing in both countries.
