Sat Mar 29 18:26:33 UTC 2025: **Istanbul Protests Erupt as CHP Demands Release of Jailed Mayor**

ISTANBUL, TURKEY – Hundreds of thousands of protestors filled Istanbul’s streets Saturday in a massive demonstration demanding the release of imprisoned Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. The rally, organized by the Republican People’s Party (CHP), represents the latest escalation in nationwide protests sparked by Imamoglu’s arrest on March 19th on corruption charges. While initial terrorism charges were dropped, the subsequent corruption charges have led to his formal arrest.

CHP leader Özgür Özel condemned the arrests of nearly 1,900 protestors since March 19th, alleging the government aims to intimidate and silence dissent. He explicitly called for Imamoglu’s immediate release, alongside other political prisoners including former presidential candidate Selahattin Demirtaş. Özel announced plans to collect signatures for Imamoglu’s release and to demand an early general election.

Imamoglu, a prominent rival to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, sent a message to the rally, vowing defiance and asserting the unity of the nation against oppression. Protestors echoed similar sentiments, expressing concerns about the erosion of Turkish democracy and the independence of the judiciary. One young protester stated, “I am 25 and have only known one government – I want to see change.”

The government maintains the judiciary’s independence and denies political motivation behind Imamoglu’s arrest. President Erdoğan denounced the protests, characterizing the demonstrators as spreading terror. Despite the large-scale demonstrations and previous crackdowns, police maintained a distance at Saturday’s rally, reporting no new arrests.

Imamoglu symbolically won the CHP’s presidential primary last Sunday, solidifying his position as a leading opposition figure, despite his imprisonment. The upcoming presidential election, currently scheduled for 2028, may be brought forward. Saturday’s rally featured speeches from Imamoglu’s wife, Dilek Imamoglu, and Ankara Mayor Mansur Yavaş, further highlighting the CHP’s unified opposition to the government’s actions.
