Sat Mar 29 19:50:00 UTC 2025: **Rays Transform Yankees’ Stadium into Temporary Home After Hurricane Damage**

TAMPA, FL – In a feat of unprecedented speed and scale, the Tampa Bay Rays have completely transformed George M. Steinbrenner Field, the spring training home of the New York Yankees, into their temporary home stadium for the 2025 MLB season. This dramatic makeover, completed in just four days, was necessitated by Hurricane Milton’s destruction of Tropicana Field, the Rays’ long-time home in St. Petersburg.

The hurricane, with winds reaching 120 mph, caused irreparable damage to Tropicana Field’s roof, rendering it unusable for the upcoming season. With the MLB season opener fast approaching, the Rays secured a deal with the Yankees to utilize Steinbrenner Field, a move involving over 80 Rays staff and 50 contractors working around the clock.

The transformation involved rebranding the entire stadium, including installing over 3,000 signs, replacing team logos and colors (though the similar navy blues of both teams minimized repainting), and updating the clubhouse and amenities to meet MLB regular-season standards. The iconic George Steinbrenner statue, however, remained untouched.

The project, estimated by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred to cost $50 million, included upgrades already underway at Steinbrenner Field, such as a renovated clubhouse and enhanced player facilities. The Yankees’ Single-A affiliate, the Tampa Tarpons, will play at an adjacent upgraded field. The Rays’ home opener, initially scheduled for Thursday, was pushed back to Friday to allow for the completion of the transformation.

Despite the swift turnaround, challenges remain. Steinbrenner Field’s seating capacity of 11,026 is significantly smaller than Tropicana Field’s, and the open-air stadium presents concerns regarding Florida’s summer heat and rain. The Rays have adjusted their game schedule, playing 19 of their first 22 games at home to mitigate the weather. The team also had to address logistical issues, such as adjusting camera feeds for broadcasters and ensuring sufficient space for media coverage.

While the temporary nature of the arrangement is clearly marked—a billboard outside the stadium displays the Rays’ branding alongside the message that it’s only a temporary home—the ambitious and successful undertaking highlights the resilience and adaptability of the Rays organization and the collaborative spirit demonstrated by both the Rays and Yankees organizations.
