Sun Mar 30 04:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Hindu New Year Celebrations to Begin March 30th, 2025

**MUMBAI, INDIA –** The Hindu New Year, celebrated across India under various names, will commence on March 30th, 2025. Known as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra and Goa, Ugadi in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka, and Poila Boishak in West Bengal, the festival marks the beginning of a new lunar or solar year, signifying new beginnings, prosperity, and spiritual renewal.

Celebrations are vibrant and diverse across regions. Traditional rituals include an oil bath with neem leaves, hoisting colorful flags, and the Panchanga Sravanam, a yearly astrological forecast reading. Homes are cleaned and decorated with intricate floor designs (alpana) and buntings (jhalar). New clothes are worn, and festive meals are shared with family.

In Bengal, the day is marked by the exchange of “Shubho Boishakh” greetings and feasts of traditional dishes like panta bhat and mishti. Markets and fairs bustle with activity, offering fresh produce, sweets, and new attire.

The festival’s origins are rooted in Hindu mythology, with the creation of the world attributed to this day by Lord Brahma. Mathematician Bhaskaracharya, in the 12th century, also identified Ugadi as the start of a new era, signifying the arrival of spring after winter. The festival’s diverse regional expressions highlight the rich tapestry of Hindu culture across India.
