**Salem, Tamil Nadu, March 30, 2025** – Salem witnessed a series of unfortunate incidents over the weekend, including a robbery, a rabies-related death, and a fatal traffic accident.
On Saturday night, a six-member masked gang broke into the home of a retired village administrative officer, Venugopal (76), in Palakkadu near Gangavalli. They threatened Venugopal, his wife, and granddaughter at knifepoint, stealing 20 sovereigns of gold jewellery and ₹10,000 in cash. Police, including Salem Range DIG E.S. Uma and District SP Gautam Goyal, are investigating, collecting forensic evidence and reviewing CCTV footage.
Tragically, a 9-year-old boy, M. Kishore, died of rabies on Saturday night at Salem Government Hospital. His parents were unaware he had been bitten by a stray dog. As a precaution, 10 family members received rabies vaccinations.
In a separate incident on Sunday, a 50-year-old man, M. Palraj, died in a road accident on the Salem-Coimbatore National Highway near Avarampalayam. His two-wheeler was struck by a car, resulting in his death and the car catching fire. The car driver, S. Ashwin Suresh (55), sustained injuries and is hospitalized. Sankagiri police are investigating the accident.
