**Bengaluru, March 29, 2025** – Infosys co-founder and Aadhaar architect Nandan Nilekani predicts a transformative shift in India’s energy sector, likening it to the revolutionary impact of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) on the nation’s financial landscape. Speaking to entrepreneurs, Nilekani highlighted the burgeoning potential of widespread rooftop solar adoption, envisioning a future where every home becomes a producer, consumer, and potentially even a seller of energy.
“We’re used to buying energy in small packets, like LPG cylinders,” Nilekani explained. “But electricity has always been seen as coming from the grid. With rooftop solar and home EV batteries, every home will be a producer, a storage unit, and a consumer. Just like UPI, you’ll be able to buy and sell energy.”
This decentralized model, Nilekani argued, could spawn millions of micro-energy entrepreneurs, fueling economic growth and innovation. He termed this vision a “Digital Energy Grid (DEG),” echoing a similar tweet he posted on March 28th.
The comparison to UPI’s success is significant. UPI, launched less than a decade ago, now handles 80% of India’s retail payments, processing a record 16.99 billion transactions worth over ₹23.48 lakh crore in January 2025 alone. Its international expansion into countries like the UAE, Singapore, and Bhutan further underscores its impact.
Nilekani’s vision paints a picture of a future where India’s energy landscape mirrors the accessibility and ease of use that defined UPI’s success, potentially leading to a similarly transformative effect on the nation’s energy independence and economic growth.
