**Yangon, Myanmar –** India has launched a major relief operation, codenamed “Operation Brahma,” in response to the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday. The operation underscores India’s commitment to being a first responder in times of international crisis, reflecting the country’s philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” – the world is one family.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke directly with Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, expressing his condolences and pledging India’s full support. India’s swift response saw the immediate dispatch of 15 tons of relief material, including tents, sleeping bags, medical supplies, and other essentials, via air. A further five aircraft are deploying to transport search and rescue teams, a field hospital with 118 medical personnel, and additional supplies. Additionally, 80 members of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), along with canines and equipment, are being deployed. Four naval ships are also providing humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR).
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that no Indian nationals have been reported injured or killed. The first plane carrying aid reached Yangon early Saturday morning, with the Indian ambassador handing over the supplies to the Yangon Chief Minister for immediate distribution to affected areas. Subsequent aid is being directed to Mandalay, the region most severely impacted by the earthquake.
Mr. Jaiswal emphasized India’s long-standing policy of providing immediate assistance during international crises, citing the similar Operation Dosti launched following Cyclone Yagi in Myanmar. He also highlighted that the Indian ambassador is coordinating closely with Myanmar authorities to assess long-term needs, particularly in infrastructure reconstruction in Mandalay.
The USGS has reported that Friday’s quake was the most powerful to hit Myanmar in over a century, with a death toll estimated to potentially exceed 10,000. Despite this tragedy, Prime Minister Modi’s planned visits to Thailand and Sri Lanka remain unchanged.
