Sat Mar 29 13:23:35 UTC 2025: ## Gandhi’s Great-Grandson Challenges Sabarmati Ashram Renovation in Supreme Court

**New Delhi, March 29, 2025** – Tushar Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson, has appealed to the Supreme Court, challenging the Gujarat government’s renovation of the Sabarmati Ashram. He argues the project contradicts Gandhian principles of simplicity and violates articles 39 and 49 of the Indian Constitution, which emphasize preventing wealth accumulation and protecting national monuments.

The petition, filed on March 29th, claims the renovation transforms the ashram into a theme park, undermining its historical significance. It seeks a stay on construction to preserve the ashram’s cultural heritage. The Gujarat High Court dismissed a similar plea in September 2022, accepting the state’s assurance that the core five-acre ashram would remain untouched. However, Mr. Gandhi contends that the overall project, including additions like a cafeteria and parking, is incompatible with the ashram’s legacy.

The Gujarat government maintains the renovation aims to restore dilapidated buildings and create a world-class museum to better showcase Gandhi’s life and teachings to a wider audience. The Supreme Court will hear the case on April 1st.
