**New Delhi, March 29, 2025** – Over 1.43 lakh contempt of court cases are currently pending in Indian High Courts, while another 1,852 cases await resolution in the Supreme Court, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal revealed in a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Friday.
The figures, sourced from the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) and the Supreme Court, represent a significant backlog in the judicial system. The data shows 1,852 contempt cases pending before the Supreme Court as of March 20th, and 143,573 pending in High Courts as of March 24th.
Minister Meghwal stated that the government does not possess information regarding the reasons for non-compliance in these cases. He clarified that the responsibility for implementing court orders rests with the relevant administrative ministries and departments. The backlog highlights ongoing challenges within the Indian judicial system.
