**Khartoum, Sudan** – The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which erupted in 2023, has plunged Sudan into a devastating humanitarian crisis. Over 13 million people have been displaced, with millions seeking refuge in neighboring countries like Libya, South Sudan, Chad, and Uganda. The conflict’s roots lie deep in Sudan’s history, marked by decades of military coups and internal strife.
The current crisis is a culmination of long-standing power struggles. The SAF, historically dominant, was challenged by the RSF, a paramilitary force initially formed from the Janjaweed militia, notorious for atrocities committed in Darfur. The RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (“Hemeti”), amassed significant power and wealth, creating a volatile power dynamic with the SAF. The 2018 revolution, which ousted long-time dictator Omar al-Bashir, failed to resolve the underlying tensions.
The current fighting, marked by intense clashes in Khartoum and other regions, including North Darfur, has resulted in widespread destruction and suffering. Eyewitness accounts, corroborated by social media, detail horrific atrocities committed by both sides, including killings, rapes, and looting. The conflict has also severely disrupted essential services, causing widespread food insecurity and hindering access to education. Over 800 food-producing companies have been destroyed, leaving millions facing starvation, particularly impacting children.
Despite recent claims by the Sudanese army of significant victories and the recapture of Khartoum, the RSF continues to fight. The conflict’s end remains uncertain, leaving the future of Sudan and its displaced population deeply precarious. A member of the Sudan Liberation Army Movement (SLAM), Mohammed Zakaria, poignantly describes the impact on his own family, now scattered as refugees across multiple countries, representing the widespread human cost of the protracted conflict. International aid agencies are desperately trying to meet the immense humanitarian needs amidst the ongoing violence.
