**Mandalay, Myanmar/Bangkok, Thailand –** A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck northwest of Sagaing, central Myanmar, on Friday, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming the lives of over 1,000 people. The shallow quake, followed by a 6.7 magnitude aftershock, caused widespread devastation, collapsing buildings, destroying bridges, and buckling roads across swathes of the country. The second-largest city, Mandalay, bore the brunt of the damage.
The military junta reported 1,002 confirmed deaths and 2,376 injuries as of Saturday, with the majority of fatalities in Mandalay. However, officials warned that the death toll is likely to rise significantly as rescue efforts continue amidst the rubble. A state of emergency has been declared in six severely affected regions. Even in Naypyidaw, the capital, medical personnel were forced to treat the injured outdoors due to hospital damage.
Neighboring Thailand also felt the tremors, resulting in at least six deaths, 26 injuries, and 47 missing in Bangkok, primarily due to a collapsed high-rise building. Authorities are inspecting over 2,000 damaged buildings in the city.
The earthquake, the strongest to hit Myanmar in over a century according to US geologists, prompted an unprecedented appeal for international aid from junta chief Min Aung Hlaing. This marks a stark departure from previous military regimes’ reluctance to accept foreign assistance.
The international community responded swiftly. The UN allocated $5 million for immediate relief efforts. The US, despite concerns about past foreign aid cuts, pledged assistance. China dispatched over 80 rescuers and pledged $13.8 million in aid. Russia sent 120 rescuers and supplies. India, France, the European Union, and several other nations also offered assistance, including search and rescue teams, medical personnel, and vital supplies. The WHO mobilized to provide trauma injury supplies. Asean also pledged its support.
Despite the international response, challenges remain. Damage to Mandalay airport is hindering relief efforts, and the ongoing civil war has already severely strained Myanmar’s rescue services and healthcare system. Reports indicate that over 90 people may still be trapped in a collapsed apartment building in Mandalay. Experts warn that the final death toll could be significantly higher than current estimates. The USGS’s automatic assessment suggested a 35% chance of fatalities ranging from 10,000 to 100,000. Weak infrastructure and the ongoing conflict further complicate the already immense relief operation.
