Sat Mar 29 10:06:28 UTC 2025: ## Madhya Pradesh Rebrands Unemployed Youth as “Aspirational,” Sparks Opposition Backlash

**Bhopal, March 29, 2025** – The Madhya Pradesh government’s decision to relabel its more than 2.9 million unemployed youth as “Aakanshi Yuva” (aspirational youth) has ignited a fierce political debate. While the ruling BJP defends the move as a positive reframing, emphasizing self-employment opportunities and investments, the opposition Congress accuses the government of trivializing the plight of jobless citizens.

The term “Aakanshi Yuva” appeared on the state’s Rojgar Portal, listing the number of unemployed individuals. State Minister Gautam Tentwal explained the rationale, stating that both employed and unemployed individuals aspire for advancement, justifying the new label. BJP spokesperson Pankaj Chaturvedi highlighted the government’s efforts to promote self-employment through initiatives like the Global Investors Summit, which reportedly attracted over ₹30 lakh crore in investment proposals promising 2.1 million jobs. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav added that government jobs alone cannot solve unemployment in a country of India’s size.

However, the Congress party vehemently criticized the renaming. Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), condemned the government for mocking the struggles of unemployed youth and accused it of using the new terminology to mask its failures. Singhar pointed to years-long delays in filling various government positions as evidence of the government’s inaction. He further alleged that the name change was a tactic to deflect attention from the government’s shortcomings, echoing criticisms stemming from past controversies like the Vyapam scam. The Congress demands concrete steps to address the high unemployment rate instead of what it deems a superficial renaming exercise.
