**Chennai, March 29, 2025** – Veera, a popular lion at Chennai’s Arignar Anna Zoological Park (AAZP), passed away on March 28th. The zoo announced the news in a press release, expressing deep sadness over the loss of the 13-year-old animal.
Born at the zoo on June 30, 2011, to parents Raghav and Kavitha, Veera had been a long-time resident and a familiar sight to visitors. He had suffered from hip dysplasia since a young age, which ultimately contributed to his death.
Despite a month of intensive veterinary care, including expert consultations from the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Veera’s condition did not improve. The zoo’s veterinary team provided continuous monitoring and treatment, but ultimately were unable to save him. The AAZP stated that Veera had been recumbent for the past month and that the decision to put him down was made after the condition proved insurmountable.
