Fri Mar 28 20:25:00 UTC 2025: ## Kashmir Jama Masjid Closure Sparks Outrage Amidst Al-Quds Day Protests
**Srinagar, March 29, 2025** – The Jammu and Kashmir Police’s decision to prevent congregational prayers at Srinagar’s historic Jama Masjid on Friday, coinciding with Al-Quds Day, has triggered widespread condemnation. The closure followed Shia protests in central Kashmir expressing solidarity with Palestine.
Hundreds participated in Al-Quds Day marches in Budgam, chanting pro-Palestine slogans and carrying banners condemning Israeli actions. Simultaneously, authorities registered cases under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in Baramulla and Pattan against individuals displaying Hezbollah flags and raising slogans in support of the militant group.
The police cited concerns about maintaining public order, but the move was heavily criticized by prominent figures. Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Kashmir’s chief cleric, decried the repeated closure of the Jama Masjid, stating it infringed upon the fundamental right to religious practice. He highlighted the irony of this action in light of claims of normalcy in the region.
Peoples Democratic Party leader Iltija Mufti and National Conference MP Aga Ruhullah also condemned the closure, with Ruhullah describing it as an act of “cowardice.” Ruhullah had encouraged observing Friday as Youm al-Quds, demonstrating solidarity with Palestine and highlighting the resilience of Kashmiri faith. The Jama Masjid remained closed throughout the day, preventing Friday prayers.
