**Visakhapatnam, March 29, 2025** – The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) passed a ₹4,762 crore budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year on Saturday. The budget, presented by Mayor Golagani Hari Venkata Kumari, allocates approximately ₹4,601 crore for revenue and capital projects, leaving a projected closing balance of ₹160 crore for 2026-27.
The budget meeting was held amidst a no-confidence motion against the Mayor, with the absence of most YSRCP corporators noted. Opposition party members expressed concern over the timing of the meeting, held just two days before the fiscal year’s end, but ultimately approved the budget citing the importance of development for the city.
Significant allocations include ₹553 crore for underground drainage in Madhurawada Zone II, ₹77 crore for road maintenance, ₹150 crore for education, ₹36 crore for water supply maintenance, and ₹56 crore for park and green space development. ₹95 crore is earmarked for CLAP vehicle maintenance.
Concerns were raised regarding the relatively low allocation for education, with CPI corporator A.J. Stalin highlighting a lack of expansion in GVMC schools in recent years. TDP corporator K. Govardhan urged for increased funding to address pollution issues in the Gajuwaka region.
