**KYIV, UKRAINE** – A Russian drone barrage on the eastern Ukrainian city of Dnipro has resulted in at least four deaths and 21 injuries, regional governor Sergiy Lysak reported Saturday. The attack, involving over two dozen drones, caused widespread destruction, including fires at a hotel, restaurant, and numerous residential buildings. Images circulating online show significant damage to high-rise apartments and widespread devastation.
This attack is part of a surge in aerial assaults by both Russia and Ukraine, occurring as the United States urges both sides to agree to a ceasefire after more than three years of conflict. President Zelenskyy stated that over 170 drones targeted various Ukrainian regions overnight.
Russia claimed gains on the ground in eastern and southern Ukraine, reporting the capture of several settlements in Donetsk, Zaporizhia, and Sumy regions. Simultaneously, the Russian Defense Ministry accused Ukraine of repeated attacks on its energy infrastructure in the Belgorod region, leaving thousands without power.
Amidst the escalating violence, President Putin called for a UN-administered transitional government in Ukraine, a proposal immediately dismissed by President Zelenskyy as a delaying tactic to avoid a peace deal. Zelenskyy accused Russia of prolonging the war through terror tactics and a lack of meaningful pressure.
The US continues its efforts to broker a ceasefire, focusing on halting strikes targeting energy infrastructure in both countries. While both sides have nominally agreed to such truces, implementation remains uncertain as mutual accusations of bad faith persist. Ukrainian analysts warn of an anticipated major Russian offensive in the spring, aiming to bolster Moscow’s negotiating position.
