**COIMBATORE, INDIA – March 29, 2025** – Dr. S. Raja Sabapathy, Chairman of the Department of Plastic, Hand and Microsurgery and Director of Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore, has become the first Indian surgeon to lead the International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand (IFSSH). He assumed the presidency on March 28th at the federation’s triennial congress in Washington D.C.
The IFSSH, a 59-year-old organization representing 62 member nations, is the world’s largest body of hand surgeons. Dr. Sabapathy’s presidency marks a significant milestone for Indian surgery.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Sabapathy announced that his term will focus on expanding access to quality hand surgery care for underserved populations. He will be supported by an executive committee representing diverse nations including the U.S., UK, China, Japan, Belgium, Columbia, and Ecuador.
