Sat Mar 29 14:55:24 UTC 2025: ## Madurai Court Sentences Business Partner to Three Years in Duty Drawback Fraud Case

**Madurai, March 29, 2025** – A Madurai court sentenced C.P. Ramakrishnan, former partner of Trend Settlers, to three years rigorous imprisonment and a ₹60,000 fine for his involvement in a fraudulent duty drawback case. The Second Additional District Judge (CBI Cases), S. Shunmugavel, delivered the verdict on Friday.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed the case in 2007, alleging that Ramakrishnan conspired to defraud the Central government of ₹3.48 crore through the Duty Exemption Entitlement Certificate (DEEC) scheme. The accused, along with others, allegedly exported worthless cloth scraps to falsely claim export obligations against imported textile raw materials, thereby illegally obtaining duty exemptions.

A former Superintendent of Central Excise, A. Srinivasan, who allegedly issued false examination reports, died during the trial. The case against other accused remains pending. The fraudulent scheme involved importing ₹3.54 crore worth of textile raw materials and illegally claiming duty exemptions totaling ₹3.48 crore.
