**GUWAHATI, March 29, 2025** – Assam’s Advocate General, Devajit Saikia, resigned from the Gauhati High Court Bar Association on March 28th, citing disagreements over the proposed relocation of the court to Rangmahal in New Guwahati. The move, planned by the BJP-led state government since 2023, has faced significant opposition from the bar association, which has staged protests against the plan to shift the court from its current location in the heart of Guwahati across the Brahmaputra River.
Mr. Saikia, who is also the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), stated in his resignation letter that his constitutional duty required him to support the government’s and high court’s decision. He argued the relocation would create a more modern and efficient judicial environment, alleviating traffic congestion and addressing infrastructural deficiencies at the current site. He emphasized that the new location would offer a better working space for lawyers and judges.
The bar association, however, remains firmly opposed to the relocation. The Advocate General’s resignation highlights the deep divisions over this contentious issue.
