**Salem, Tamil Nadu – March 29, 2025** – Ten laborers from West Bengal were rescued Friday night after being kidnapped in Salem, Tamil Nadu. The men, from Murshidabad and Birbhum districts, were traveling to Kerala for work when they were abducted at Salem railway station.
According to Additional Superintendent of Police Raspreet Singh, the kidnappers, a group from Tamil Nadu, lured the workers with false promises of employment and held them at a secret location, demanding ransom from their families. One family member reported that videos depicting the torture of their relatives were used to pressure them into paying.
West Bengal Police tracked the workers’ phone signals, collaborating with Tamil Nadu Police to locate and raid the hideout. All ten laborers were successfully rescued. They are currently undergoing legal procedures in Tamil Nadu before returning home.
The incident highlights the plight of migrant workers, with an estimated 21.67 lakh registered on the West Bengal Migrant Welfare Board portal. This kidnapping follows a similar incident last October, where a West Bengal migrant allegedly died of starvation in Chennai, sparking a political debate.
