Thu Mar 27 22:30:00 UTC 2025: **Reds Closer Alexis Díaz to Begin Season on Injured List**
GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Cincinnati Reds All-Star closer Alexis Díaz will start the season on the injured list due to left hamstring inflammation, manager Terry Francona announced Sunday. Díaz, who recorded 37 saves in 2023 and 28 in 2024, struggled this spring training after initially injuring his hamstring. He experienced command issues and never had a clean inning in his four appearances, prompting the decision to place him on the IL.
Francona cited concerns that pitching through the injury would further jeopardize Díaz’s health and effectiveness. The team has set no timetable for his return, prioritizing his full recovery over a rushed comeback. The manager emphasized that while they want Díaz to eventually reclaim the closer role, the team will assess their relief pitching options before naming a replacement.
Several pitchers are vying for the ninth-inning role, including newcomers Scott Barlow and Taylor Rogers, both with significant save experience, and Graham Ashcraft, recently transitioned from the starting rotation. With Díaz’s absence, non-roster invitee Ian Gibaut is expected to fill the final pitching spot on the Opening Day roster.
Díaz will remain with the team as he begins his rehabilitation under the supervision of Reds’ pitching coaches and Dr. Franky Mulloy. Francona stressed the importance of addressing the underlying mechanical issues contributing to the injury, focusing particularly on Díaz’s lead leg. While the team will maintain his arm strength, they aim to ensure he returns to his peak form before resuming his role as the team’s closer.
