**Bhopal, India –** The Madhya Pradesh government’s recent decision to relabel unemployed youth as “Aspirational Youth” has ignited a firestorm of criticism, with opponents accusing the state of attempting to mask a growing job crisis. While the government claims the unemployment situation is not as dire as critics portray, the renaming has only served to fuel public anger.
The initiative, which extends the government’s controversial renaming practices beyond geographical locations, comes as official figures show a slight increase in unemployment from 25.82 lakh in July 2023 to 26.17 lakh in December. However, the newly coined term “Aspirational Youth” encompasses a broader figure of 29.36 lakh.
This move has been met with fierce opposition. Congress MLA Pratap Grewal accused the government of manipulating statistics and avoiding the release of actual unemployment figures for fear of public backlash. He highlighted a previous report indicating 33 lakh unemployed individuals in July, asserting that the renaming is a mere cosmetic fix rather than a solution to the real problem.
The experiences of young graduates like Prakash Sen, who now runs a tea stall after pursuing a computer science degree, and Aryan Srivastava, an agriculture graduate struggling to find employment in his field, underscore the frustrations faced by many. Further emphasizing the difficulties, Shailendra Mishra has already spent Rs 30,000 on exam preparation with uncertain prospects, while Sonali Patel awaits police recruitment results since 2019.
Madhya Pradesh Skill Development Minister Gautam Tetwal defended the change, arguing that the official unemployment figures don’t reflect the reality. He claimed that individuals working in family businesses, or those earning less than Rs 12,646 monthly without stable employment, are incorrectly included in unemployment statistics. However, the government has not released data clarifying how many of the 3.22 lakh offer letters issued at job fairs between 2020 and 2024 actually resulted in employment. The lack of transparency surrounding this data further fuels public skepticism. The controversy highlights the ongoing debate surrounding unemployment in Madhya Pradesh and the government’s approach to addressing it.
