Fri Mar 28 10:01:28 UTC 2025: ## Sudanese Army Claims Victory in Khartoum After Months-Long Battle
**Khartoum, Sudan** – The Sudanese army declared a decisive victory in Khartoum on Friday, claiming to have fully cleared the capital of Rapid Support Forces (RSF) fighters after months of intense fighting. The announcement follows a major counteroffensive that pushed the RSF out of key positions, including the presidential palace, which army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan visited for the first time in two years.
Military spokesman Nabil Abdullah stated that the army had “forcibly cleansed” the remaining RSF pockets in Khartoum, referring to the paramilitary group led by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo as a “terrorist militia.” Al Jazeera reports indicate that the recapture of the Jebel Awliya area, and the subsequent control of the Jebel Awliya Bridge, effectively cut off RSF escape routes and supply lines, leaving them vulnerable.
While the army claims complete control of the city, Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan reported that some RSF fighters remain holed up in residential buildings, fearing capture. Despite this, the RSF vehemently denied defeat, vowing “no retreat and no surrender” and claiming its forces merely repositioned. The group also announced a new military alliance with the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), a rebel group operating in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states.
This alliance immediately led to drone attacks on Damazin, the capital of Blue Nile state, targeting the airport and Roseires Dam, although the army claims its air defenses intercepted the drones.
The conflict, which began in April 2023, has caused a devastating humanitarian crisis. Tens of thousands have been killed, over 12 million displaced, and the International Rescue Committee describes the situation as the “biggest humanitarian crisis ever recorded.” The war has effectively split Sudan in two, with the army controlling the north and east, and the RSF holding parts of the south and most of Darfur. The long-term implications of this claimed victory remain uncertain, with the ongoing conflict in other regions of the country and the newly formed RSF alliance posing significant challenges.
