Fri Mar 28 16:14:23 UTC 2025: ## Rajya Sabha Disrupted by Protest Over Expunged Remarks on Rana Sanga

**NEW DELHI, March 28, 2025** – The Rajya Sabha’s proceedings were disrupted on Friday following Samajwadi Party MP Ramji Lal Suman’s controversial remarks about 16th-century Rajput king Rana Sanga. Suman’s comments, since expunged from the record, sparked outrage, leading to protests and a temporary adjournment.

The BJP demanded an unqualified apology from Mr. Suman, while the Opposition walked out in protest after Karni Sena, a Rajput group, vandalized his Agra residence. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar highlighted the challenges posed by social media, noting that while the remarks were expunged from the official record, their spread online undermined the expunction’s effectiveness. He urged the Rajya Sabha’s ethics committee to develop a code of conduct to prevent similar incidents.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized Mr. Suman’s language, urging the Congress to condemn the statement. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge responded that while the Opposition respects all patriots, resorting to vigilantism is unacceptable.

Further attempts by Mr. Suman to address the House were met with renewed protests from the treasury benches, resulting in a half-hour adjournment. Following the adjournment, the Opposition staged a walkout after Mr. Suman was again denied the opportunity to speak. The Rajya Sabha subsequently resumed its Question Hour. The incident underscores the growing tension between the ruling party and the opposition, and the challenges faced by Parliament in managing public discourse in the digital age.
