**CHARLOTTE, NC** – The NFL is mourning the loss of former Super Bowl champion Matt Stevens, who passed away at the age of 51. Stevens, a standout safety known for his hard-hitting style and special teams prowess, enjoyed a seven-year NFL career from 1996 to 2003.

Drafted in the third round by the Buffalo Bills, Stevens went on to play for the Washington Redskins, where he recorded a remarkable six-interception season in 1999. His career culminated in a Super Bowl victory with the New England Patriots in 2001. He also played for the Philadelphia Eagles and Houston Texans.

Before his NFL success, Stevens was a walk-on at Appalachian State University, where he rose to become a two-time All-American and was later inducted into the App State Athletics Hall of Fame.

Tragically, Stevens was involved in a motorcycle accident in 2007, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. He is survived by his mother Jean Thillberg, father Vincent Stevens, brother Mark, and his two children, Cassidie and Colin.
