Thu Mar 27 18:02:58 UTC 2025: ## New Rail Overbridge to Ease Polur Town’s Decade-Long Traffic Woes

**TIRUVANNAMALAI, March 27, 2025** – Residents of Polur town near Tiruvannamalai can finally breathe a sigh of relief as a long-awaited Rail Overbridge (ROB) is set to open in April. The ₹24.66 crore project, a joint venture between Southern Railway and State Highways, will replace a manned railway level crossing that has divided the town for a decade.

The 700-meter-long, 12-meter-wide bridge will feature 50 LED streetlights, tiled footpaths, steel hand railings, and staircases connecting to the railway station. Its completion marks the end of a significant inconvenience for residents, particularly those in tribal hamlets in the Jawadhu Hills, who previously faced lengthy detours and transportation difficulties.

The bridge will significantly improve connectivity, linking Polur to key towns such as Chengam, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Vandavasi, Arcot, and Arani via the Chittoor-Cuddalore Highway. Currently, motorists must navigate a 10km detour, causing significant delays and impacting access to schools, colleges, government offices, and healthcare facilities.

Delays in land acquisition pushed the project’s cost from ₹17.37 crore in 2019 to ₹24.66 crore in 2023. Despite these challenges, the project, approved in April 2013, is nearing completion, with the remaining work on the carriageway above the railway track being undertaken by Southern Railway. The bridge is expected to be a lifeline for the community, easing traffic congestion and improving accessibility for all.
