Fri Mar 28 10:47:45 UTC 2025: ## 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Myanmar, Triggers Panic in Bangkok

**Bangkok, Thailand – March 28, 2025** – A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake, centered near Mandalay, Myanmar, sent shockwaves across the border into Thailand today, causing widespread panic and damage in Bangkok. The tremors, felt as far away as eastern India and China’s Yunnan province, brought the bustling Thai capital to a standstill.

Prem Kishore Mohanty, an Indian national residing in Bangkok, described the terrifying experience while attending his daughter’s school sports day. “I felt my head spinning, and the chairs were moving,” he recounted to NDTV. The school immediately ordered an evacuation to the outdoor field, advising people to avoid high-rise buildings as water cascaded from their swimming pools. Videos circulating on social media showed similar scenes at the InterContinental Bangkok hotel.

The earthquake caused significant disruption. Public transport was suspended, traffic came to a halt, and people gathered outside buildings awaiting the all-clear. A 30-story skyscraper under construction collapsed in northern Bangkok, trapping 43 workers. While low-rise buildings suffered less damage, higher floors in many structures experienced falling objects and burst pipes, Mr. Mohanty reported. He also described the frantic evacuation from his own apartment building, where he, his wife, and daughter are safe despite a crack appearing in their apartment wall.

The Indian Embassy in Thailand reported no injuries to Indian nationals so far and provided an emergency contact number for assistance. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra declared a state of emergency and cut short an official visit to address the crisis.

While earthquakes are rare in Bangkok, existing emergency protocols helped manage the situation. However, the intensity of the tremors and the timing – a busy Friday afternoon – created widespread chaos. The event underscored the vulnerability of even well-prepared cities to the unpredictable power of nature. Myanmar, located near the seismically active Sagaing Fault, has experienced several large earthquakes in the past.
