**Madurai, March 27, 2025** – Madurai Corporation Mayor Indrani Pon Vasanth presented a ₹1,480.13 crore budget for the fiscal year 2025-26, prioritizing infrastructure development and improved living standards for residents. The budget projects a revenue of ₹1,439.40 crore, comprising ₹800 crore in tax revenue and other earnings, ₹379.34 crore in government subsidies, and ₹260.06 crore in borrowings.

A significant portion of the expenditure will be allocated to capital expenses (₹725.75 crore), followed by salary disbursement (₹336.17 crore), upkeep (₹324.89 crore), administrative expenses (₹52.80 crore), and loan repayment (₹40.53 crore).

Key initiatives outlined in the budget include:

* **Improved Food Access:** Establishment of a “Food Street” near Mattuthavani for affordable food and job creation (₹3 crore).
* **Enhanced Education:** Construction of smart reading rooms in 24 Corporation schools (₹75 lakh) and installation of CCTV cameras in Corporation schools (₹2 crore). Students achieving centum marks will receive ₹10,000 each through CSR funding.
* **Infrastructure Upgrades:** Augmenting the storm-water drainage system (₹4 crore), constructing Smart Roads (₹12.40 crore), establishing two STEM parks (₹10 crore), and renovating the eco park (₹1 crore). The budget also includes beautification projects along bridges (₹1 crore) and the installation of solar panels (₹5 crore).
* **Addressing Stray Cattle:** A dedicated facility to manage stray cattle will be established (₹2 crore).
* **Public Information & Engagement:** Installation of LED screens at ten locations to showcase government schemes (₹1 crore) and the creation of “Namadhu Madurai, Namadhu Perumai” selfie points at eight locations (private participation).

While the Mayor highlighted the budget’s focus on development, AIADMK councilors expressed concerns about the late circulation of the budget document and requested additional time for discussion. The Mayor agreed to consider their request.
