**Chennai, March 28, 2025** – The Madras High Court today dismissed a petition by Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma. Subramanian and his wife, Kalpana Subramanian, seeking to quash charges of land grabbing. The charges stem from a 2019 complaint alleging the couple fraudulently obtained two government plots in Guindy, Chennai, in 1996, using fabricated documents to claim ownership.
The complaint, filed by S. Parthiban, an independent candidate who ran against Mr. Subramanian in the 2016 Assembly elections, alleges the couple forged documents, including a ration card and legal heir certificate, to falsely portray Ms. Subramanian as the daughter of the original plot allottee, S.K. Kannan (deceased). Mr. Parthiban presented evidence suggesting Ms. Subramanian’s father’s name was Sarangapani, not Kannan.
The Organised Crime Unit of the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) filed a chargesheet against the couple in 2019, leading to the petition to quash the charges. Justice P. Velmurugan, in rejecting the petition, directed the special court handling MP/MLA cases to proceed with framing charges, trial, and ensure its expeditious completion. The charges against the Minister and his wife include cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
