Fri Mar 28 08:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Mohanlal’s “L2: Empuraan” Fails to Deliver Despite Star Power and Action Sequences

**Kochi, Kerala –** Mohanlal’s highly anticipated sequel, “L2: Empuraan,” a lavish action spectacle, has opened to mixed reviews. While boasting a star-studded cast, exotic locales, and impressive action sequences, the film is criticized for a weak plot, excessive length, and an identity crisis that clashes with the nuanced storytelling typically associated with Malayalam cinema.

The film, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, takes place in a Kerala grappling with political turmoil. Mohanlal, playing the returning messiah figure Stephen/Khureshi Ab’raam, doesn’t appear until a considerable time into the film, leaving the first hour feeling disjointed and lacking narrative focus. While the second half delivers on promised action, particularly a standout jungle fight sequence showcasing Mohanlal’s charisma, this is insufficient to redeem the film’s shortcomings.

Despite strong performances from Mohanlal, Prithviraj Sukumaran, and a scene-stealing Abhimanyu Singh, the film’s convoluted plot underutilizes the talents of actors like Tovino Thomas and Manju Warrier. The film’s violence is also criticized for being unnecessarily graphic and at odds with the sensibilities of typical Malayalam cinema.

While the film aims for a pan-India appeal, borrowing elements from Telugu and Tamil cinema, critics argue it loses its core Malayalam identity. The ambition to blend the finesse of Malayalam cinema with mass appeal ultimately falls short, resulting in a film that, despite its action highlights, fails to deliver a cohesive and satisfying narrative. Though visually stunning, “L2: Empuraan” ultimately receives a mixed verdict, praised for its action but criticized for its weak plot and identity crisis.
