Thu Mar 27 16:16:28 UTC 2025: ## Hundreds of Proposals Flood India’s AI Mission
**Bengaluru, March 27, 2025** – India’s ambitious AI mission has received an overwhelming response, with over 187 proposals submitted for the development of indigenous large language models (LLMs). The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced the figure, revealing a surge in applications following an initial call for proposals in January.
Abhishek Singh, additional secretary at MeitY, stated that 67 proposals were received by February 15th, followed by an additional 120 by March 15th. The India AI initiative aims to create homegrown foundational AI models, including both LLMs and smaller language models (SLMs).
The need for greater indigenization in technology was also highlighted at the Nano Electronics Roadshow and Conference on Semiconductor Ecosystem. ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan emphasized the continued reliance on imported electronics, particularly within the space sector. While acknowledging the high level of indigenization in launch vehicles (90%), he pointed out that 90% of the remaining 10% of imported components are electronics, calling for a roadmap to drastically reduce this dependency.
