**Amsterdam, Netherlands** – A stabbing attack near Amsterdam’s Dam Square left five people wounded Thursday afternoon, Dutch police reported. One suspect has been apprehended.
The incident occurred around 3:30 PM local time (14:30 GMT) on a street adjacent to the iconic square. Among the victims are two American citizens, a 67-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man. The other injured individuals include a 26-year-old Polish man, a 73-year-old Belgian woman, and a 19-year-old Amsterdam resident. Initial reports indicated four seriously injured individuals, but police later clarified that five victims sustained injuries, including the suspect.
A trauma helicopter landed on Dam Square to assist in the emergency response, alongside numerous police vehicles and ambulances. The area was temporarily cordoned off but reopened approximately two hours later.
Police have not yet determined a motive for the attack, stating that the possibility of random targeting is being investigated. The suspect’s identity and any potential connection to the victims remain undisclosed pending the ongoing investigation.
