**Tiruchirappalli, March 28, 2025** – Farmers in Tiruchirappalli district raised concerns about environmental damage during a monthly grievance meeting on Friday. Their primary demands centered on mitigating pollution in the Uyyakondan river and protecting water bodies during the construction of a four-lane semi-ring road.
R. Subramanian of the Cauvery Delta Farmers’ Association highlighted severe pollution from sewage discharge into the Uyyakondan River, impacting farmers’ health and agricultural activities. He urged the Water Resources Department (WRD) and Tiruchi Corporation to address the issue. A WRD official stated that the sewage problem will be resolved upon completion of the ongoing underground drainage scheme, a sentiment echoed by Collector M. Pradeep Kumar.
M.P. Chinnadurai of the Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam expressed concerns about the impact of the semi-ring road project on irrigation tanks. While not opposing the road development, he requested that it be constructed as an elevated road to avoid damaging these vital water resources. A High Court petition regarding this matter is currently pending.
Further demands included compensation for farmers affected by yellow mosaic disease in blackgram crops and the release of sufficient water in irrigation canals for standing crops. The meeting underscores the need to balance development projects with environmental protection and the well-being of the farming community.
