Fri Mar 28 08:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Malayalam Film “Empuraan” Shatters Box Office Records with Massive Opening Day

**KOCHI, INDIA** – Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s new film, *Empuraan*, has made history, achieving the biggest opening day ever for a Malayalam film. The movie raked in a staggering ₹22 crore nett across India on its Thursday release.

According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film’s strong performance was driven primarily by its ₹19 crore nett collection in Kerala, with additional revenue from Telugu (₹1.2 crore), Tamil (₹80 lakh), Hindi (₹50 lakh), and Kannada (₹5 lakh) markets. High occupancy rates were reported in major cities like Kochi (over 97%) and Thiruvananthapuram (around 85%), with over 800 shows in Bengaluru alone.

*Empuraan’s* ₹22 crore opening surpasses the previous record-holder, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s *Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life*, which earned ₹7.6 crore on its opening day. Mohanlal’s *Marakkar Lion of the Arabian Sea* holds the third position with ₹6.8 crore.

Industry analysts predict *Empuraan* will quickly surpass the lifetime collections of other successful 2024 Malayalam releases, such as *Rekhachitram* (₹26 crore) and *Officer on Duty* (₹31 crore), potentially within just two days. This impressive debut follows a strong year for Malayalam cinema, with films like *Manjummel Boys* crossing ₹140 crore domestically. The success of *Empuraan* further solidifies the growing strength of the Malayalam film industry.
