Thu Mar 27 23:54:00 UTC 2025: ## Banerjee’s London Trip Spurs Hope for Direct Kolkata-UK Flights

**Kolkata, March 28, 2025** – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s recent visit to London has sparked optimism for the reintroduction of direct flights between Kolkata and the United Kingdom. The Trinamool Congress announced Thursday that British Airways is planning bi-weekly direct flights following a request made by Ms. Banerjee.

While the Trinamool Congress has made the claim on social media, British Airways has yet to officially confirm the development. Ms. Banerjee, during her trip, appealed to the Indian Ambassador to the UK to pursue the establishment of a direct route, citing the inconvenience of her recent 18-hour journey due to disruptions at Heathrow Airport.

The Chief Minister highlighted the historical presence of British Airways on the route before her party came to power, and emphasized the need for improved connectivity. She further reiterated her appeal during an investor session, offering fuel concessions to airlines establishing direct flights. Earlier this year, she also discussed the possibility of direct flights to Europe with the Chairperson of Tata Sons, following Air India’s takeover, receiving a positive response. The announcement comes after Ms. Banerjee’s earlier push for improved air connectivity at the Bengal Global Business Summit.
