Thu Mar 27 19:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Yankees’ Rice Mashing Home Runs This Spring Training

**SARASOTA, FL** – New York Yankees catcher/first baseman Ben Rice is having a standout spring training, displaying increased power and a more refined approach at the plate. His impressive performance has garnered attention from manager Aaron Boone, who’s praised Rice’s consistent hard hitting and improved control of the strike zone.

Rice currently boasts a .260 batting average, five home runs (tied for third in the Grapefruit League), and nine RBIs. Even after a recent 0-for-4 game, his slugging percentage remains high at .560, with an .899 OPS and 28 total bases. Boone attributes Rice’s success to significant strength gains (adding 10 pounds) and the invaluable experience gained during his rookie season last year.

Rice’s Major League debut last June was initially promising (.294 average), but he later struggled, finishing the season with a .171 average. He credits his current success to focusing on his strengths and learning from his past mistakes. He’s increased his average exit velocity and demonstrates improved timing, approach, and barrel awareness.

His versatility is also an asset, having played eight games at catcher and five at first base this spring, with additional appearances as a designated hitter expected. His role for the upcoming season will depend on the team’s decisions regarding the number of catchers on the roster. Rice’s ability to play multiple positions increases his value to the team.

Meanwhile, despite a less impressive showing this spring, reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge remains in good spirits and is confident he’ll be ready for the regular season. Boone expressed confidence in Judge’s abilities and his approach to fine-tuning his performance in spring training.
