DHAKA, Bangladesh (March 28, 2025) – Bangladeshi police have filed a new criminal case against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, currently in exile in India, accusing her of plotting to overthrow the interim government. The case stems from a December virtual meeting of nearly 600 Awami League members, allegedly conspiring to incite civil war and reinstate Hasina to power. Police spokesman Jasim Uddin Khan stated that while initial charges named Hasina and 72 others, further indictments are possible as the investigation continues.
This latest charge adds to numerous existing indictments against Hasina and her loyalists, related to a crackdown on protests last year that resulted in hundreds of deaths. A UN report earlier this year implicated Hasina’s government in systematic attacks and killings during its attempts to retain power.
Following a student-led revolution last August, Hasina’s government was overthrown, and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus now leads an interim administration tasked with implementing democratic reforms before elections scheduled for June 2026.
