NEW DELHI (March 28, 2025) – The Delhi High Court will hear a petition challenging the election victory of BJP MLA Satish Upadhyay in the Malviya Nagar constituency. AAP leader Somnath Bharti, who lost to Upadhyay by 39,564 votes in the February assembly elections, alleges “corrupt practices” under the Representation of People Act.
The court adjourned the case until April 8, giving Bharti time to submit documents supporting his claim of a pending criminal case against Upadhyay. Upadhyay’s lawyer denied the existence of such a case, demanding concrete evidence from Bharti. The judge emphasized the need for verifiable information, stating that making false statements in an affidavit would be serious.
This is the latest in a series of election challenges filed in the High Court. Earlier this week, petitions were also submitted questioning the victories of Deputy Chief Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma and AAP leader Atishi. The court stressed the importance of avoiding “fishing expeditions” in these cases, given the elected status of the respondents.
