**KATHUA, JAMMU AND KASHMIR —** Three police officers were killed and five others injured in a fierce gun battle with terrorists in Kathua district, Jammu and Kashmir, officials confirmed Thursday. Two terrorists were also killed in the encounter, while three to four others remain at large and are reportedly holed up in the area.
The operation, which began Sunday evening in the Hiranagar sector, involved multiple security forces including the Army, National Security Guard, Border Security Force, Police, Special Operations Group, and Central Reserve Police Force. The forces had been conducting searches for the past five days following intelligence reports. A local resident reported seeing two men in army uniforms earlier this week.
The encounter, lasting over half an hour, involved heavy fire exchange. The terrorists, believed to have infiltrated from across the border on Saturday, were located in a forest area near Sanyal village. Helicopters, drones, bulletproof vehicles, and sniffer dogs supported the operation. Authorities recovered a significant cache of ammunition, including two grenades, and tracksuits matching those worn by Jaish-e-Muhammad terrorists killed in previous encounters. Three suspects have been detained for questioning.
The operation was led by Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat. The injured officers are receiving medical treatment. The search for the remaining terrorists continues.
