**Srinagar, India –** Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced Thursday that the separatist movement in Jammu and Kashmir is nearing its end, citing the recent renunciation of separatism by two more groups: J&K Tahreeqi Isteqlal and J&K Tahreek-I-Istiqamat. These groups, previously affiliated with the Hurriyat Conference, have reportedly pledged their allegiance to the Indian government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
This follows a similar announcement earlier this week by the JK People’s Movement (JKPM) and the Democratic Political Movement (DPM). Notable figures involved include Advocate Mohammad Shafi Reshi, former political secretary to hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani (and uncle of PDP leader Yasir Reshi), and Mohammad Shahid Mir, chairman of JKPM.
The move represents a significant blow to the Hurriyat Conference, which has been largely inactive since the revocation of Article 370 and Article 35A in August 2019, and its subsequent division into factions led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Masarat Alam Bhat. The Home Minister attributed the decline of separatism to the Modi government’s policies, asserting that the movement is “breathing its last.” While the long-term impact of these defections remains to be seen, the government is clearly framing this as a major victory in its efforts to integrate Jammu and Kashmir more fully into the Indian Union.
