Thu Mar 27 23:34:06 UTC 2025: ## Historic Cuddalore Collectorate Building to Undergo ₹16.2 Crore Restoration
**Cuddalore, March 28, 2025** – The 128-year-old red brick building that once served as the Cuddalore District Collector’s office is slated for a major restoration project. The Public Works Department’s Building Centre and Conservation Division will undertake the ₹16.2 crore renovation, citing the building’s historical significance and current state of disrepair.
The 44,960 sq. ft. structure, built between 1895 and 1897, has suffered age-related damage, particularly to its Madras tile roofing and walls. However, a preliminary assessment deemed the building structurally sound. Initially housing the Collector’s office for the erstwhile South Arcot district (encompassing Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Kallakurichi), it continued to serve this purpose until 2020. Currently, the building houses the District Treasury Office, District Forest Office, Cuddalore Museum, and District Record Centre.
Restoration work will encompass re-plastering ceilings, pillars, and arches with lime mortar; replacing damaged wooden doors and window shutters; and repairing the Madras terrace roof. Vegetation removal and saline treatment for stone pillars and brick walls are also planned. The PWD will soon release tenders for the project, with work expected to commence following the award of the contract.
Historical accounts reveal the challenges faced by British Collectors in finding suitable office space in the early years, leading to the building’s eventual construction after initial use by a native cavalry regiment and several modifications to existing structures. The building, designed in the Roman architectural style, is notable for its high ceilings, arches, vaulted structures, and domes.
