Wed Mar 26 17:11:32 UTC 2025: ## BJP in West Bengal Accuses Ruling TMC of Using Iftar Parties for Political Gain
**Kolkata, March 27, 2025** – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal has accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of using Iftar parties held in state-run higher educational institutions to consolidate Muslim votes ahead of the 2026 elections.
Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari alleged that these Iftar parties, organized with police support and at the behest of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, are a new trend aimed at garnering Muslim votes. He questioned the lack of similar grandeur for Hindu festivals on the same campuses. This statement follows a video shared by BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar showing alleged restrictions on Saraswati Puja at Jadavpur University, contrasting it with the Iftar celebrations. Majumdar criticized the “liberal left” for allowing Iftar parties while allegedly restricting Hindu religious observances.
However, Debanjan Dey, Students Federation of India’s West Bengal State Secretary, countered these claims, stating that organizing religious festivals on campuses is not new and that various religious groups have participated in diverse celebrations. He accused the BJP of using this issue to disrupt the social harmony of Bengal and advance its political agenda. The BJP’s accusations have sparked a political debate in the state, highlighting concerns about religious polarization ahead of the upcoming elections.
