Thu Mar 27 02:00:00 UTC 2025: ## UPI Outage Causes Widespread Disruption in India’s Digital Payments
**New Delhi, March 26, 2025** – A widespread outage of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system caused significant disruptions to digital transactions on Wednesday. The hour-long disruption, affecting a large number of users, triggered a flood of complaints on service disruption monitoring site Downdetector.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the regulator responsible for UPI, acknowledged the issue, attributing it to intermittent technical problems. In a statement on X, the NPCI stated that the problems have been resolved and the system has stabilized, expressing regret for the inconvenience caused.
UPI, built on the IMPS infrastructure, enables instant money transfers between bank accounts. Its popularity stems from its free-of-charge service, lack of minimum transaction limits, and convenient features like AutoPay for recurring payments. The outage highlights the reliance on UPI for everyday transactions in India, from small local purchases to larger financial transfers.
