**Chennai, March 27, 2025** – Tamil Nadu is bracing for a record-breaking peak power demand this summer, with projections reaching 22,000 MW, according to Electricity Minister V. Senthilbalaji. This represents a significant increase from last year’s peak of 20,830 MW.

Minister Senthilbalaji, speaking after a review meeting at the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board headquarters, confirmed the state’s preparations to meet the anticipated surge in demand. The state’s power consumption has already shown a steady increase, peaking at 17,279 MW and 18,584 MW in January and February respectively. Further increases are projected for March (19,500 MW), April (21,943 MW), and May (22,079 MW).

The state government has implemented various measures to ensure a stable power supply, including leveraging its own generation capacity and securing additional power through short-term agreements and power swaps. Tenders for additional power purchases have been finalized to address the anticipated high demand in April and May.

Long-term plans are also underway, with 7,000 MW of thermal power generation capacity and 14,500 MW of pumped storage capacity additions planned. The meeting was attended by Tangedco Chairman and Managing Director J. Radhakrishnan and other officials. The minister assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to prevent power outages throughout the summer months.
