**Lucknow, March 27, 2025** – Tensions flared in Uttar Pradesh today following an attack on the Lucknow residence of Samajwadi Party (SP) Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Lal Suman by members of the Karni Sena, a Rajput organization. The attack, which allegedly involved vandalism, prompted widespread protests by SP workers who accused the BJP of orchestrating the incident to incite caste tensions.
The Karni Sena justified their actions, claiming Mr. Suman’s remarks insulted Rajput icon Rana Sanga. SP leaders countered that the attack targeted Dalits, highlighting Mr. Suman’s caste. SP General Secretary Ram Gopal Yadav condemned the attack as reflecting a “feudal mindset” and threatened state-wide protests after Eid if no action is taken. Senior SP MLA Shivpal Singh Yadav directly accused the BJP of being “anti-Dalit.”
Counter-protests by Rajput groups, including the burning of Mr. Suman’s effigies, were reported across the state. They demanded an FIR against the MP and the revocation of his Rajya Sabha membership.
The BJP denied involvement, describing the incident as a calculated SP strategy to create caste-based polarization. BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi pointed to previous statements by SP leaders as evidence of a deliberate attempt to stoke societal tensions. However, the Agra police have filed an FIR against unidentified individuals for rioting, attempted murder, robbery, and trespassing, stemming from the attack on Mr. Suman’s residence.
Mr. Suman, refusing to apologize for his statements about Rana Sanga, maintained that he would not retract historically accurate information. The incident has further escalated political tensions in Uttar Pradesh, with accusations and counter-accusations flying between the ruling BJP and the opposition SP.
