**Madurai, Tamil Nadu – March 27, 2025** – The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has ordered improvements to sanitation facilities in the village of Mallapuram, Gujiliamparai, Dindigul district, following a public interest litigation (PIL) petition.
The petition, filed by M. Amutha, a 50-year resident of Mallapuram, highlighted the lack of proper toilet facilities, leading to open defecation and posing serious health risks. While a sanitary complex was built in 2010, it fell into disrepair due to a lack of water and maintenance, rendering it unusable. Despite attempts by the women residents to maintain the complex, their efforts were unsuccessful due to lack of support from local authorities.
The petition also cited the absence of adequate street lighting and drainage systems. Previous representations to the authorities regarding these issues had been ignored.
The court, presided over by Justices J. Nisha Banu and S. Srimathy, has directed the Block Development Officer to investigate the issues and take necessary remedial action. This includes restructuring the existing toilets and providing water and lighting facilities to the residents of Mallapuram.
